Weather that knows where it is

Bermuda sits in the middle of the Atlantic, and weather here is not a background detail. It decides whether the boats go out, whether the ferry runs, whether the flight lands and whether Saturday is a beach day.

The forecasts people had were global models that treat the island as a dot on a map, or bare feeds with no context. Wopnin was built for this island first: its airport, its reef line, its hurricane season and the way people here actually talk about the weather.

How a forecast is made

Thirty-odd sources, one answer

Most weather sites pick one model and show it. Wopnin pulls from more than 30 sources every five minutes: the airport's own reports, the big global models, ocean buoys, tide gauges and commercial forecast services.

Where they disagree, a three-tier engine settles it with plain arithmetic. No AI touches the numbers. The Bermuda Weather Service's warnings are shown word for word beside the forecast, never blended into it.

Three tiers, plain arithmetic

1

Weighted mean

Each source counts for as much as its recent accuracy has earned. The airport and the buoys count most.

2

Regime shift

Tropical, frontal, fair or marine: the weights shift to whichever sources do best in the weather Bermuda is having.

3

Ensemble spread

How far the sources disagree becomes the forecast’s confidence.

Bermuda Bliss

Every number from arithmetic. The words come after.

Scored against what actually happened. Every source is checked against the airport's observations and its weight moves with the result. One that drifts is put on probation, the Shark Oil Test, and its say is halved.

The Bermuda voice

Weather with a voice, not a data table

Conditions are distilled into 23 named vibes, each with its own colour, its own animated backdrop and its own lines: 372 of them, written for the island. BELCO, MarketPlace, the south shore and a dark and stormy on the patio all turn up.

When a storm or a marine warning is live, the voice turns serious on its own.

  • Tornado Warning

Tornado warning. Not the night for being brave.

  • Eclipse

Eclipse in progress. The chickens are confused. So is everyone.

  • Storm Watch

Storm watch tonight. Candles out, phone charged.

  • Gusty Bermuda

Windy tonight. The recycling's doing laps of the parish.

  • Thunder Shower

Thunder and lightning. BELCO's crossing their fingers.

  • Wet & Windy

The kind of evening Bermuda earns. Inside, kettle on.

  • Rainy Day Vibes

Rain showers. MarketPlace car park is a splash zone.

  • Gentle Rain

Soft rain. The kind that makes you want tea and a book.

  • Misty Island

Still misty. Headlights on, ego off.

  • Sweltering

Hot enough to fry a fish sandwich on the bonnet.

  • Sun Blaze

Bright and hot. The tarmac's gone soft again.

  • Cold and Damp

Cold and clammy. The house feels like a cave.

  • Muggy

Muggy afternoon. The air has texture today.

  • Sticky Situation

High humidity. Walking to the car counts as exercise today.

  • Tropical Thick

Warm and humid. Classic Bermuda. Cold drink required.

  • Bermuda Bliss

Bliss. Your boss doesn't need you. The south shore does.

  • Island Breeze

Nice evening breeze. Walk home the long way.

  • Windy Vibes

Breezy. The palm trees are dancing. Your hat isn't.

  • Sun & Clouds

Partly cloudy but pleasant. Good golf weather.

  • Cloud Cover

Cloud cover. Walk weather without the sunburn risk.

  • Gray Day

Gray day. Good for getting indoor things done.

  • Rainbow Skies

Rainbow tonight. The sunset plus the rainbow. Not bad, Bermuda.

  • Chilly Bermuda

Cold. The kind of Bermuda evening where you eat dinner in a hoodie.

Every vibe and line verbatim from Wopnin's vibe configuration.

Marine and beaches

For the people on the water

Marine gives a Go or No-Go for the day from wave height, swell, wind and water temperature, with rip current risk for the south shore and a synopsis in plain words.

All 25 public beaches are scored, with the best one for right now at the top, and fishing conditions and St. George's tide times sit beside them.

Storms and alerts

Built for people who have done this before

Hurricane season runs June to November, and Wopnin watches the Atlantic for all of it: the National Hurricane Center's outlook, the closest a system will come to the island, and what each category actually means here.

Warnings arrive as they are issued, and the radar runs on its own map with rain, cloud and satellite layers.

Aviation

The airport's own report, decoded

Pilots and operations teams get the METAR and TAF for L.F. Wade International, decoded into flight category, ceiling, visibility, wind and crosswind, beside the raw report they already know how to read.

Widgets and big screens

Live on other people's websites

Six free widgets put the same forecast on any website with one iframe tag, cut down to the readings that site's visitors care about and styled to match it.

A big-screen mode runs full screen on lobby TVs, rotating through the day's weather on its own.

Home Assistant

The vibe can run the house

A free integration brings Wopnin into Home Assistant with one Submit button: no API key, no sign-up. It adds a weather entity, the readings as sensors, switches for weather and tropical alerts, and the vibe itself.

So the vibe can drive an automation: close the shutters when a storm comes in, or turn on the porch light when it does. The same forecast also reaches Alexa, Apple Shortcuts and devices that speak the OpenWeatherMap format.

The result

Wopnin is live at wopnin.fyi and free to use, on a phone, a laptop or the TV in the lobby.

The Royal Gazette covered the launch in May 2026, and businesses around the island now run its widgets on their own websites.

Local businesses can sponsor it, from the whole platform down to a single vibe.
